The Club was founded in 1893 by Mr.J.E.Dean, builder and contractor, of Ashton-on-Mersey. Mr Dean's business career was notable for many public works in the Sale and Ashton-on-Mersey area, he was Chairman of the Ashton-on-Mersey urban authority in 1900/01 and for many years he was prominently identified with the public life of Ashton-on-Mersey and the surrounding district.

The site of the bowling green was originally a field where Mr.Dean and a few others used to play cricket. One evening Mr.Dean suggested that he would make a bowling green of it if the others would get together a membership, and that was the humble inauguration of the club. The green was laid in 1892 and the club opened in 1893. In 1896, it was floated as a small limited company, and the pavilion and Steward's house were built.

The Club was originally called the Ashton-on-Mersey Bowling Club which was changed later to The Linden Club in keeping with the many Linden trees which surround the Club grounds.
